Scale of schemeHow a case was built against a scheme that paid early investors with later investors' money
A client came to Straitmere after losing $29,800 in an online Ponzi scheme that advertised monthly returns of 300% from algorithmic trading. He was not the only one — the same operation had taken money from people across several cities, most of whom never came forward.
What happened
The client invested in a project promising exceptional returns from automated trading. For the first few months the platform showed regular "profits" and even paid out small withdrawals on request — the mechanism every Ponzi scheme depends on, because nothing builds trust like being paid, and nothing encourages a larger deposit like a small success.
Then withdrawals stopped, blamed on "technical maintenance". Shortly afterwards the platform collapsed entirely and the website went offline. The money paid out early had come from later investors' deposits; there was never any trading.
How the case was worked
We opened a full investigation into the digital footprint behind the platform to identify the actual people running it, rather than the names on the website. That work established who was behind the operation and where the deposits had been routed.
We filed criminal complaints with the prosecutors in the relevant jurisdictions and made sure the financial crime units involved were working from the same evidence rather than separate fragments of it — coordination that matters, because these schemes are built to look like many unrelated small disputes instead of one large fraud.
Where it landed
After sustained work on several fronts, a substantial part of the client's money was recovered, and the investigation led to the identification of the people running the scheme. The outcome rested with the authorities involved — what we did was assemble the case and keep it moving.
Because the evidence covered the whole operation rather than one client's loss, it also opened a route for other victims of the same scheme. That is often how these cases work: one person willing to come forward makes it possible for others.
